【Taromak】 2024 Hunter’s Lodge Reconstruction Project Survey

Updated: Feb 7

📢 On August 19, 2024, we received a message from the Taromak Tribe requesting assistance in reconstructing the traditional hunter's lodge. They asked if we could help recruit volunteers to support the effort.

📅 On August 24, we visited the tribe to assess the reconstruction needs and clarify project details.

☝️ We first inspected the hunter's lodge. Due to heavy rain, water was leaking everywhere inside. The original betel nut wood structures were broken and severely damaged. If the space were to continue serving as an environmental education center for the tribe, its current condition would pose serious safety risks and inconvenience.

Traditional materials such as betel nut wood, bamboo, and thatch are not only sustainable but also enable young community members to engage in cultural preservation through hands-on construction. However, rebuilding requires significant time and resources, and not all young people can commit to the entire project duration. As a result, we decided to use an alternative construction method that remains eco-friendly and sustainable by incorporating bamboo.

☝️ Next to the hunter’s lodge is a bamboo processing area, where bamboo poles are drilled and heat-treated to strengthen their structure.

☝️ After assessing the worksite, we took a short break at Hua Ma Homestay, enjoying a relaxing stroll through the nearby landscape—an incredibly healing experience.

☝️ In the evening, we gathered at Liyuan’s house to finalize the event schedule and construction plan. We also had the opportunity to taste freshly grilled venison—an unforgettable experience!

On August 25, 2024, the Traditional Hunter’s Lodge Reconstruction Project officially begins!
