[Taromak Hut 1] Activity Report

As early as August 2024, the Environmental Education Base Project quietly began. With the help of many hands, bamboo for the Traditional Hunter’s Lodge Reconstruction Project was delivered to the site, preparing for the extensive rebuilding work ahead.

After the August 24 site survey, heavy machinery was used to remove the damaged roof, marking the first major step in the restoration process.

📅 September 7 – Hunt 1 Team Arrival

🏗 Preparing the Worksite & Securing the PillarsThe first task was to clear the workspace before installing the lodge’s eight primary support pillars. During the process, we had to constantly check the alignment with a leveling instrument, ensuring each pillar was perfectly vertical and evenly spaced with the others.

🍽 Tribal Hospitality & DIY Dinner

One of the most exciting parts of being in Taromak is always the unexpected surprises—especially when it comes to Shuhua’s amazing dinners!

Tonight, we were lucky enough to enjoy fresh venison—an absolute treat! As usual, the preparation process was a group effort, making the meal even more special. For the rest of the dishes… well, let’s just say you’ll have to watch the video and learn some indigenous Rukai words to figure out what we ate! 😆🎥

🌱 September 8 – Bamboo Heat-Treatment & Archery Practice

🔥 The morning’s mission: heat-treating the bamboo!This task may seem simple, but controlling the fire requires great skill—too much heat and the bamboo burns; too little and it remains too soft. This was our test of craftsmanship!

🏹 Midday Break – Becoming Archers!After finishing the bamboo treatment, we took a well-earned rest and discovered a bow and arrow nearby. Naturally, we couldn't resist trying our hands at some archery practice—a fun and fitting way to wrap up our hard work!
